Hi Delma, Roland Forum moderator here to let you know that Casey will reply to your question directly. In regards to bowing and what is the correct way I can say that every fiddler will have a way of bowing their tunes different than others. But what you want in your bowing is to have strong rhythm. One way to achieve this is to use a down bow on…[Read more]

Hi Casey, Wow, what a sweet arrangement, classic quality Bluegrass voice, and who would not like Stuart Duncan’s Sweet Fiddling that seems so easy and effortless. Sometimes I remind myself to try for economy of motion on the fiddle to get that clean sweet sound.

Hi Brian, I’ll pass along your Tune suggestion to Casey for future studio recordings. That is a really cool tune by the way. There are some fine folks playing it on youtube, if you search for “Catharsis fiddle” and you can start checking it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi David, Forum moderator here responding to your good question. In general ornaments are the choice of the player as to what type of ornament to use or when to use it. In Trad music it really depends on who you’re listening to. Many players favor one type of ornament over another and will use that most often. Some times the type of ornament…[Read more]

Hi Fred, Forum Moderator here. I can’t answer your question for Casey but I’m sure he will be checking in soon and be able to give you an answer. If it helps when I hit a rough spot I might record what I’m trying to learn and then download it into a slow downer or media player to help me hear it at a slower speed. Even if I still don’t get it…[Read more]

Hi Rene, Thanks for the questions on bowing exercises. I think if you follow up on Casey’s suggestions you will see and feel a difference. The only thing I would add is to try to add the bowing skills at the beginning of your practice sessions. I use about 25% of my practice time to warm up with bow, scale and intonation exercises before I…[Read more]

Hi Fred, Roland White Forum Moderator here. I will let Casey answer your question for following his bowing as I’m sure he will chime in. But I will say that bowing can be interpreted many different ways. A good general rule for fiddling is to try to use a down bow on the down beat. Down beat is on beats 1 & 3 of a 4 beat tune so if you start…[Read more]
