Hi FV fiddlers, I’m starting a new phase from full time to part time work and one of the items on my list was to get back to regular focused practice.
Wow I’m really out of shape and focused practice is really hard. I’m dusting off the fundamentals like bowing and scales to warm up and wow I’m a rusty bucket.
Good news though, by warming up for…[Read more]

Hi WS, one of the things I like best is they last. The G & D go for 8 months or more depending on how much you play. For me that was about 1-2 hours a day for practice. I would wear out the A & E in about 4 months so I replaced with Vision Titanium. The strings do have a soft feel settle in quickly and hold tuning with a nice full warm rounded…[Read more]

Hi Dan, I play on the Pi’s. I love the resonance and tone wearability and stability. They last really good too. It’s to bad that strings are not more reasonably priced. Its hard to spend over $100 bucks just to try them out. I would also say that I’m lucky they sound so good on my fiddle. Let me know what works for you. Best regards, Roland

HI Dan, I’ll pass that question on to Casey and Kevin on what type string he uses but I can make some recommendations for purchase. GO Strings in NY consistently has the best prices I’ve found. I’ve had folks tell me Shar Music and SW Strings are good outlets too. Strings seem to steadily go up in price but also up in quality for the better sets,…[Read more]

Hi Ulla, Well I must say you are taking to the instrument quite well for the short time you have been playing. Nice job on Jig of slurs, especially your steady rhythm, and melody line. It’s very inspiring to hear of not only your progress but your bravery in posting you music as for many others its easy to be shy. Thank you for sharing, not only…[Read more]

I’m with you there, contests are the best excuse to get together with your music folks and do some good old picking.
For me contests are to have fun and play my best. There are a lot of contests in the SW during the winter months but I haven’t been to any of those. Have fun its a great experience. Best Roland -

Hi WS, I think being outside of the box works up to a point as long as you do the tune style the contest requires. The larger Western Contests are different than the Oldtime Contests in the South and SW. So be sure and read the rules of each contest to see what tune forms are allowed. Most contest fiddle is based on dance music and playing a…[Read more]

Roland White replied to the topic Slip Jig in the forum General Fiddle Forum Topics 8 years, 7 months ago
Hi Rob, I also have never found out why they are called Slip Jigs. I will say that with Patti on FV you might try a few Canadian jigs as they are very rhythmic and the bowing usually compliments the beat. Also fun and catchy sounding, many of them inspired by Celtic influences. Have fun and fiddle on Rob. Best Roland

Hi Peter, I’m curious how that rhythm might be affected or change for different kinds of beer, like a 7.8% RPM from Bend and the kind that Casey and I attest as the best. Cheers. //;-) Roland

Hi DianeG, Thats a good question for our forum. Its easier than you think and intuitive too. Basically play the tune to the point you want to start and click on the looper at the start, play the passage you want to practice and then click again at the stopping point. Then hit play to repeat the loop till your done. Speed goes up or down to one…[Read more]

Hi Diane G, Thanks for the additional info for Octave Violin setups. Once I get it strung up I will let you know what it sounds like. I didn’t realize one would need a heavier bow with extra arm weight & pressure to play them but now that I think about it it makes sense. The 3/4 Viola I acquired looks to have a good set up on it with a nicely…[Read more]

Hi John W, Good question? I don’t have a specific recommendation for you for amps but for getting to the Blue Tooth or Wireless platform here is an idea for you. I’m not sure what kind of a pick up you’re using on the guitar, but a good option I use on my Mandolin is a Fishman Bridge Pick up installed with the 1/4 jack connection at the end…[Read more]

Hi DianeG, Thanks for the additional comments on Strings. I really like it when players post their experience with string products, saves us fiddlers testing time, money and gives us insights to your history and knowledge of strings without paying the price. Thanks for sharing. Best Roland FV Moderator.
