Hi Patti, Here is a link to a youtube video showing how the Bon Musica is adjusted and works. It might help you decide if it is worth trying. There are many good ones but I firmly believe this is the most adjustable one for fit and comfort I have found. Check it out.

Hi Patti, Roland White Forum Moderator here. Regarding Shoulder Rests for a lot of folks its a work in progress. Most of them are built pretty much the same way so its a matter of being able to try a variety of them to see what works for you. I think Casey likes the Wolfe if I remember correctly, I’m sure he will chime in on this and correct me if…[Read more]

Roland White replied to the topic Left Hand Technique (for a left handed player) in the forum Fiddling Techniques and Playing Advice 9 years, 10 months ago
Hi Drew, Glad to hear that changing things up has helped you. Tremolo is used on the plectrum instruments mostly mandolin, and vibrato is used on the violin. It takes a while to develop a good vibrato so study all your favorites and you can check Casey’s suggestions and youtube some basic vibrato lessons to get started. In fiddling its used more on…[Read more]

Hey Bob & Casey, I don’t know how I missed your post Bob but a very interesting topic. I find myself working on slurs now more than ever, although I have always done them I just tended to do them as specifically ornaments because I play a lot of Celtic tunes. But in Texas tunes and waltz’s I’m now trying to pay attention to how the top players do…[Read more]

One of the top groups in my opinion! making new original music and taking the old tunes to a new level.

Hi Drew, I would agree with Casey to get as close to holding it right by switching out the chin rest. If you want to see an incredible lefty check out our former National and current Grand Masters Champion Katrina Nicolayeff on You tube. She plays a right handed fiddle left handed but does have the chin and shoulder rest in the proper place. She…[Read more]

Hi Anders, Thanks for posting the video I really enjoyed it. I’ve always loved that tune and that is a nice soft jazz setting. Love the tone in her playing, you can tell she has devoted her life to playing and perfecting her art. Thanks for checking in to the form and sharing that clip. Come back soon.

I have to agree Casey these guys know how to play well together. They tour regularly here and a lot in Mexico. I also saw Alex play at the National Fiddle Contest and he placed in the top 10 of the Open Championship Division. I’m so envious of those folks that got to start at ages 3-5 and know the violin from top to bottom.

Roland White replied to the topic Bridge Setup in the forum Fiddle Setup and Repair 9 years, 11 months ago
I agree with both Larry and Casey, the violin/fiddle has to include the total instrument one mm or cm off can make a big difference for either bridge or sound post. I’ve been told that the inner notch on the f hole is supposed to be the correct location however I have seen bridges not set up like that. The Luthier by feel and experience can make…[Read more]

Roland White replied to the topic Bow Technique in the forum Fiddling Techniques and Playing Advice 9 years, 11 months ago
Hi Larry, Sorry I missed your initial post as I was traveling over the weekend. I would concur with Casey that the small movements of wrist and fingers is very subtle to observe but all the great violinists and fiddlers seem to have that mastered to get the smoothest bow control. When I first started fiddling a true Oldtime fiddler told me to use…[Read more]

He has some beautiful ones on this website so I hope you’re enjoying learning them. His detailed instruction will have you doing double stops as you learn the tunes. Have fun and check back in to let us know…[Read more]

Hi Peter, Glad to hear you checked it out and they really did make that music popular and it still is today. The Texas Playboys are legendary in the evolution of American fiddle music pushing it into elements of jazz and swing. As for Casey and Hanneke they really are pros and a couple of great fiddlers to be inspired by. Casey has some Bow…[Read more]

Hi Peter, Yes interesting using the swing segment with less of that but If you like double stops you might search youtube for Johnny Gimble. He played with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and has complete mastery with that technique. He also wrote the beautiful Gardenia Waltz, that Casey has on the site here at Fiddlevideo. Enjoy, Roland

WOW, Probably the best arrangement of this tune I’ve ever hear and the swing break in the middle is awesome. Expert backup with Joey McKenzie and bass player, but I don’t know his name. I remember James Mason back when I first started playing fiddle and he was always a good player. He also took down First place in the new Swing Division at the…[Read more]
