I learned of another tune in B that’s fun to play. It’s called The Road To Spencer by Ricky Skaggs. It’s a very Irish sounding tune but when asked about it, Ricky laughs and responds that he composed it on the way to a gig in Spencer Iowa.

Greetings Fellow Fiddlers. My understanding spouse & I are considering making a pilgrimage to Cape Breton this summer to scope out the area, enjoy seafood and most importantly check out the fiddling. Dates are flexible but most likely mid July into mid August. Can any of you recommend items to see, activities to enjoy, and most importantly where…[Read more]

I did enjoy especially when it was over. 😀
I’ve been giving thought to trying again after your encouragement. I very much enjoyed meeting the other fiddlers and preparing gave me a goal to work towards.
When I saw that you had responded to my forum post, for a fleeting moment I was worried you might have bern looking for royalties for playing…[Read more]

Well George, I was even happy with the youth group whom some played circles around me. That’s great news for our chosen passion.

I entered the Coastal Carolina Fiddle Contest on Sunday. The very first contest for me. I thought I should do so as a right of passage. Rules were simple; 2 tunes of choice, each 3 mins or under, no sheet music. I chose Blue River Waltz & Casey’s ‘ Twisted Rag’ in Bb.
The fiddlin went fast. A very quick 6 mins. I’m glad I did it. I’m also…[Read more]

I just listened to this. Enjoyed immensley. After watching & listening, I’m considering selling my D28, getting an F hole Gibson and going back to guitar and trying to play like Peter. Wouldn’t have to worry about intonation anymore.
Only kidding… I love playing the fiddle. Very nicely done, Casey & Peter.

Geroge, thanx for the quick response. I was watching Megan’s Pentatonic scale lesson when you’re reply came. Yes, I have also played tunes in multiple keys as exercises. Excellent advise. It’s a good work out, that’s for sure. Are you familiar with other fiddle tunes in the key of B?

I went to a bluegrass jam session the other day. We played all of the standards, tunes and vocals. There were a couple of good singers that like singing in B major. I found I was woefully lacking trying to take a break and provide backup licks. Decided that it would be good to take some time and learn scales in B major. Realized there are…[Read more]

I’ve listen to several YouTube versions of Brilliancy and I’m sorta confused by them. There is, of course, the Eck Robertson’s version but there seems to be a different version by Howdy Forrester ( and also Sam Bush on mandolin) which differs from Eck Robertson. Can anyone on the forum address the differences or history, because the melodies a…[Read more]

The Fiddler’s Fake Book has a pretty good version of Bluegrass In The Backwoods that seems very close to what Kenny Baker plays. I’m a fiddle hack but have managed to learn it well enough, that if I got together with a guitar player who could provide rhythm, I’d give it a try. Anyway, it’s a good way to start.

Roger Green replied to the topic What fiddle tune are you learning on right now? in the forum Fiddle Lesson Forum 1 year ago
My background is bluegrass and that is my passion. A few years ago a banjo pickin friend recorded a cd and included the tune Misty. He recorded it in D because his fiddle fiddler found the original key of Eb to be problematic. So I’ve set out to learn it in Eb just as a challange. Once I got in my head Eb, Bb and Ab, I was surprised that Eb was…[Read more]

I would like to request a new tune lesson of Roanoke, the Bill Monroe tune. Both the lead and the harmony parts. Maybe Megan and Casey could team up together on the twin fiddle parts. Thanx.

Roger Green replied to the topic Backing Tracks. in the forum Fiddle Lesson Forum 1 year, 3 months ago
Maybe a possible solution would be to pan the backing track into one channel and the performance into the other channel. (Left & Right channels). Then if someone didn’t want the backing track, pan left or right to hear just the performance.
