      Hi all,

I’m wondering if there is some guidance on the site or maybe I missed a post in the forums, on the best place to start.

I played violin as a teen some 20 years ago and imagine I should be able to pick things up fairly quickly. I was thinking it makes sense to start with the technique videos, but there seems to be a lot in the Beginner to Intermediate video section. Any suggestions on the best way to tackle things would be very welcome.

      Thanks in advance!

HI, Andrew. Thanks for joining the community, sir.

It sounds like you are planning to start in exactly as I would recommend. I would first spend some really good practice time with the right and left hand technique videos. Use the exercises recommended in each left/right hand technique lesson. These will help you to re-learn some good techniques which create good playing habits.

To help put these techniques into practice, I’d pick a beginner to intermediate song that appeals to you and work up the basic melody. Work your way through a few of the basic melodies and really focus on your right/left hand techniques…this is important to get down before tackling some of the more difficult/advanced tunes.

You will really thank yourself for spending time with the technique videos before jumping into advanced tunes/licks. Best of luck, and remember that it takes time to master the fiddle…it’s a tricky beast to tame. Keep us posted, sir!

      C
