You and me both, Roland. I’ll be with you in brushing up chops….
Good game plan. Don’t forget stretching your hands before and after playing, sir. You’ll be ready to tear it up at the jam…assuming it’s a go.
Looking forward to hearing of your progress…

Hi FV fiddlers, I’m starting a new phase from full time to part time work and one of the items on my list was to get back to regular focused practice.
Wow I’m really out of shape and focused practice is really hard. I’m dusting off the fundamentals like bowing and scales to warm up and wow I’m a rusty bucket.
Good news though, by warming up for…[Read more]

That’s a good idea, VTFiddler. I could do Draggin’ the Bow and OBS (sigh) and maybe Back up and Push/Rubber Dolly. I have too many tunes to choose from right now. I can’t wait to get back in the studio, but there’s a lot between now and then for me to get done…

Just reconsidered that – “Glasgow” reel – must be Scottish! 🙂

Hi Casey,
Really enjoying this site still. I recommend it to every fiddler I meet. I know you have a lot going on with your big move, but I was wondering if maybe in the future you would consider adding a category of Trick &Fancy, or show tunes like Dragging the Bow, bully of the town, OBS, rubber dolly, back up and push, etc.
Keep up the…[Read more] -

Thanks Casey. If Patti is coming back I bet she could teach Tam Lin Reel too, although since it’s Irish (I think), first right of refusal should probably go to Kevin :). According to the Session website, it’s also known as An Glaschú, Ceilidh Funk, Feet Of The Dancer, Glasgow’s, The Gloria Scott, Howling Wind, Indian Points, The Low, The Sneaky Pr…[Read more]

Hi, Andrea. Tam Lin has been requested a couple of times…I’ll pitch that to either Hanneke or Kevin for their next session, whenever that may be. I recorded an Americanized version of that tune about 20 years ago on somebody else. It was more of a Contra dance version…At the time, I understood the tune to be called “Tamblin”, but either I…[Read more]

Tam Lin’s (Glasgow Reel)? Seems like the B part has a few interesting variations.
I just discovered the harmony videos in Faded Love – awesome! Would love to see Gordon Stobbe / JJ Guy’s “Maligne Canyon” on here as twin fiddle videos.
Thanks

Camps:
My impression was that Jay Ungar does his camp every year. I know one person who makes attending it her annual tradition.
There is also Jink & Diddle… I think in NC… traditional Scottish Fiddle, and Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School. Hanneke teaches there every other year, and also teaches at West Denmark Fiddle School…[Read more]

A couple of days back, I posted the total number of tunes from each instructor which have already been recorded but have not yet been published. One of our members requested the full list of tunes…instead of posting the full list in my prior post, I thought it would be a good idea to create a new post as I think you guys might have quite a few…[Read more]

Hi again, Fiddleman and Fiddlemouse. Couldn’t agree more. Bluegrass is such an appealing genre for this site. I like your suggestions on bluegrass content, FM. We’ll consider those when we get ready to launch with a bluegrass instructor.
As Roland says, I have been trying to find a great bluegrass instructor to add to our team. I was…[Read more]

Roland, I was able to find a set on Amazon for $89.50 with free shipping. I ordered the set with the platinum E. My fiddle is a bit small. Not quite a 7/8 but close. I’ve been using the Evah golds on it and they sound pretty good except for the D. They are pretty hard for my left hand fingers too. I have Obligatos on it now but I’m still not 100%…[Read more]

Hi WS, one of the things I like best is they last. The G & D go for 8 months or more depending on how much you play. For me that was about 1-2 hours a day for practice. I would wear out the A & E in about 4 months so I replaced with Vision Titanium. The strings do have a soft feel settle in quickly and hold tuning with a nice full warm rounded…[Read more]

@Roland
How often do you have to change those? Are they pretty resilient? That fiddle I bought had a set of Infelds, not sure which version. Even though they were pretty old.. I kinda liked the way they sounded.
I put a set of Helicores from another instrument, and they were way way too bright.. its a pretty loud fiddle.
Obligato’s warm it up…[Read more] -

Hi, Barry. There isn’t a list of tunes/keys…if we have a bunch of requests, we could always make Key a searchable category…any other FV members out there find this useful? It would be a long dropdown….

Hi Dan, I play on the Pi’s. I love the resonance and tone wearability and stability. They last really good too. It’s to bad that strings are not more reasonably priced. Its hard to spend over $100 bucks just to try them out. I would also say that I’m lucky they sound so good on my fiddle. Let me know what works for you. Best regards, Roland
