When I bought my first violin, my mum gave me two cassettes: If the Cap Fits by Kevin Burke and Traditional Music of Ireland by Kathleen Collins. I won’t say that these two are my favourites, as there so many brilliant players, but the influence of these two players in particular on what I play, and how I try to play, is huge.

Not sure if this is the one you’re thinking of, but there’s one called “The Glass Case of Emotion”. It’s mentioned in the comments on one of the free YouTube Fiddlevideo lessons.

I’m from the UK, and now live in Wieliczka, Poland (near Krakow). Have been a fan of Kevin Burke for about 20 years and great to see the lessons from him and everyone else on Fiddlevideo!

Hi Noah,
I’ve seen people use them. I’ve only seen them at old-time jams used by older beginners.
I don’t know one from the other. It seems that the people that use them are dealing with some type of orthopedic issue that prevents a “classic hold” on the instrument.I’ve never used one and would not encourage or discourage there use. I don…[Read more]

Hi,
Does anyone have experience using either the Aceto fiddle strap or VioStrap (or some other sort of strap or sling to support the fiddle)? I’d like to hear what folks recommend.

Good answer, George. I would also recommend Megan’s Nashville Number System/fiddle capo lessons. And I’m with you, Roger…playing in B is not a ton of fun.

First, I try to spend time everyday playing standards in various keys.
For example, Rolling In My Sweet Baby’s Arms, I work on playing it in popular keys A, D, G, C but also add B, Bflat and E.

Geroge, thanx for the quick response. I was watching Megan’s Pentatonic scale lesson when you’re reply came. Yes, I have also played tunes in multiple keys as exercises. Excellent advise. It’s a good work out, that’s for sure. Are you familiar with other fiddle tunes in the key of B?
