Well, If you would like an example of two musicians completely listening to each other, check this out. Here is what practice and camaraderie will get you, if, and only if, you have the talent…:
What an amazing couple of musicians. Anybody have any other great duo/collaborations to share?

Well, it ain’t quite a fiddle song, but here is a clip which was shot for the Fiddlevideo bumpers but didn’t end up getting used. Figured I’d upload it anyway because it’s fairly cool to see the impact of the strings on the fingerboard. For what it’s worth, enjoy:

I agree with both Larry and Casey, the violin/fiddle has to include the total instrument one mm or cm off can make a big difference for either bridge or sound post. I’ve been told that the inner notch on the f hole is supposed to be the correct location however I have seen bridges not set up like that. The Luthier by feel and experience can make…[Read more]

Thanks, Larry. I’ll check his site out. Fred at THE VIOLIN SHOP is another great resource. He’s a stand up kinda guy and has done some good work for me in the past.
You’re right: bridge placement is just part of the story…sound post, string type, bow hair all play into a good violin sound…

I would ask Nick, the owner of Nicholson Music. The sound post location is also important. He restored my old violin to like new, and replaced the bridge and sound post. He has all the credentials.

Follow-up, Larry. I’ve removed caching on the site entirely, so as to keep these kinds of issues from happening. That should take care of any issues going forward.
Happy learning, sir!

Any makers or repair folks out there have some good links or advice on the best way to determine if your bridge is in the correct location??

Hi Larry, Sorry I missed your initial post as I was traveling over the weekend. I would concur with Casey that the small movements of wrist and fingers is very subtle to observe but all the great violinists and fiddlers seem to have that mastered to get the smoothest bow control. When I first started fiddling a true Oldtime fiddler told me to use…[Read more]

Hi Zengoat, Sorry I missed your initial post as I was traveling over the weekend. Nonetheless though I can’t brag enough on Casey’s waltzes. He has some beautiful ones on this website so I hope you’re enjoying learning them. His detailed instruction will have you doing double stops as you learn the tunes. Have fun and check back in to let us know…[Read more]

Thanks, Zengoat. Waltzes are where it’s at for me…too many waltzes; too little time. Take care!

Yes, that’s it. Thanks for the link, Casey! It just doesn’t come even close to your beautiful waltzes though….sigh!

The key was the mirror. I could then better see what was going on with my attempts, and begin to improve them. Then I found myself making mistakes in my practice tune, and need to work on getting two or three slow songs in better shape, so I can stand in front of the mirror without the sheet music, and focus better on the wrist and bow hold.

Hi Larry – glad to hear that this issue resolved itself. I bet you’re right…sometimes the caching and membership status (logged in vs logged out) don’t play nicely with eachother. If you’re logged in but the site doesn’t show what you expect, just hit F5. It sounds like you know what you’re doing though. If you have issues going forward,…[Read more]

Larry – I found it! I had it classified incorrectly, so it was not showing up in the bow technique videos section. This tutorial contains a bunch of my best advice on wrist and finger techniqe.
Check it out HERE, and let me know if this gave you any insights!
Keep up the good work, sir.

Hi Larry! Great question. And yes, you have hit upon the most difficult fiddling element to master in my opinion. I just realized I don’t have a technique video talking about more advanced exercises….I do have some to provide. I will post here or email you when I get that up on the site.
In the mean time, the wall trick is good if you are…[Read more]

It seems the issue must have been a cached page in the browser. It is now available to me.
Cheers,

Casey, I really like your tutorial on bow technique. I’ve also realized for a while now that it is my biggest impediment to learning to play smoothly and effortlessly, and to “stay on String” and add double-stops.
But I can’t seem to be able to bend my wrist and control my fingers and bow hold to get that smooth motion. Yet there doesn’t seem to…[Read more]

I have been working on Westphalia Waltz, from Craig Duncan’s Fiddling Method. It has been my first real attempt to learn double stops, but I realize I should get the basic melody under better control first. But it seems to be the only basic tune that the trial membership does not unlock.
I really like the version by Gary Sizemore on YouTube, and…[Read more]
