Gotta love some super talented pickers stretching the strings just a tad. These dudes simply rock. Love Gabe’s second half of his first solo.

Hi Drew, I would agree with Casey to get as close to holding it right by switching out the chin rest. If you want to see an incredible lefty check out our former National and current Grand Masters Champion Katrina Nicolayeff on You tube. She plays a right handed fiddle left handed but does have the chin and shoulder rest in the proper place. She…[Read more]

Hi, Drew. Thanks for posing the question. Maybe a left-handed player can offer some insights specific to those challenges. As to your question regarding if it’s an acceptable solution to develop a technique in which the fretting hand collapses to support the instrument, I would recommend doing anything you can to avoid it. I agree that there…[Read more]

That’s great, Bob. Fiddling (and music in general) is a life-long journey. I’m glad to connect with like-minded folks who are interested in challenging themselves. Thanks for the input on slurs as well as your feedback on the site. It, too, is a journey and I thank the folks who are along for the ride. Take care, and stay in touch, sir!!!

Hello,
I am a beginner player. I also happen to be a left-handed player, so in my case I am actually refering to my right-handed technique (fretting hand). I own a right handed violin, and am purposely trying to learn to play it upside down.
Because I have been playing a right-handed violin, the chin rest is on the wrong side of the violin,…[Read more]

Thanks for the reply Casey! I’m a big Ron Stewart fan and, watching his videos, he actually slurs less than I would have thought (his tune, Stewart’s Dream, is an example where I would have done more slurring than he actually does). It seems to me like straight bluegrass players do a whole lot of single bowing and try to keep the slurs very…[Read more]

Hi Bob. Great question. Some sluring is related to the style of fiddling. Texas/Contest-Style, for instance, lends itself to slurs in certain places, especially on turn arounds. I discuss this in several of the Contest-Style tunes taught here on the site.
For waltzes, it is much more a matter of feel and flow. I do carry slurs over the bar…[Read more]

Hi Casey,
I wondered if you have any thoughts on when to slur notes in a fiddle tune? If you are learning a tune by ear, and not able to see the bow, its sometimes difficult to hear when notes are slurred and when the bow strokes are separate. I know this is largely a matter of style, and there are no hard and fast rules, but do you have any…[Read more]

Hi Anders, Thanks for posting the video I really enjoyed it. I’ve always loved that tune and that is a nice soft jazz setting. Love the tone in her playing, you can tell she has devoted her life to playing and perfecting her art. Thanks for checking in to the form and sharing that clip. Come back soon.

I have to agree Casey these guys know how to play well together. They tour regularly here and a lot in Mexico. I also saw Alex play at the National Fiddle Contest and he placed in the top 10 of the Open Championship Division. I’m so envious of those folks that got to start at ages 3-5 and know the violin from top to bottom.
