I have also had carpel tunnel release surgery in both hands and it has changed my life. I can now drive, ride a bike, ski and play the fiddle without numb hands!
Assessment by an experienced physician is of course the first step since there are other issues that can cause numbness in the hands.

Sharon: to loop a video
Click on the video, on the bottom right of the screen you will see AB.
Drag A to your “progress bar” at the bottom of the video to begin your loop
Drag B to the point you want the loop to end.
Video will play from A to B and then loop back to A and play again. Adjust as you please. For speed

Hello. I can’t find any instructions for how to slow down and loop sections of videos – or any instructions on what the various items on the bar mean or how they are used (i.e. 10, SD, etc). Please tell me where I can find on the website or explain how to. Thanks.

Hi, Krissa. Good for you for tackling the contest environment. Contests are great because they are good motivators…and they force you to decide on a specific set of tunes, notes, and bowings.
But as far as what specific tunes you should pick, I’d say start with what you know and bucket your bag of tunes into the three categories. Keep in…[Read more]

Hi everyone,
I’m thinking about being in a Texas style fiddle competition/contest either this year or next, and I’m wondering what would be good songs to play? I have to play a breakdown, a waltz, and a tune of choice. I’m an early advanced level.
Thanks!

You may want to consult a physician. I had the same, worsening, symptoms. Became worse over a few years.
Went to my doctor who sent me to a surgeon. I had carpel tunnel release surgery on both hands.
What a relief! My symptoms resolved immediately. -

Norman Blake composed Cairo Waltz. This fact was unclear to me when I recorded the lesson, but many folks, Jay Ungar included, have set me straight. So I repeat; Cairo Waltz is a Norman Blake Composition.

Kevin Burke is a wealth of knowledge, and if you haven’t yet seen all of his technique tutorials, I would recommend checking them out: https://www.fiddlevideo.com/category/fiddle-technique-fiddle-lessons/irish-fiddling-techniqes/. I suspect that the bowing answers you seek are lightly hidden.

In the lesson for Cairo Waltz, Casey notes that Norman Blake recorded the tune but that it may originally be Celtic or Irish. What is the name for the Celtic or Irish version of Cairo waltz?

Hello,
My former fiddle teacher had me practice bowing with two and three notes slurs on a down bow—which he’d teach as I learned the tune.
I can hear the slurs in Roll Out the Barrel, but is there a rule?
How can I use the videos to learn this bowing technique?
Thank you! -

This tune was one of the reasons why I started playing the fiddle, along with some others including this one, Lily Dale – still no where near playing it unfortunately, even with the sheet music….I decided to try learning it without the doubles stops and maybe I can throw these in a few years when I get better. Right now, sometimes even I feel…[Read more]
