Thanks, Ulla. I’ve passed your request along to Hanneke. We’ll see what she chooses to record in this session. Looking forward to some more traditional Scottish tunes this time!!

I see that Hanneke Cassel is scheduled to be back to record a new set of lessons this April, so here is a little wish list of tune requests for her:
The strathspey “Miss Lyle” and also “The Hurricane” by James Scott Skinner, both played by Colin Fisher in this Youtube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-o0qcXvC60
And from her first album…[Read more]

Thanks, Sal, Roland and Sherlock.
Really, we could record at least 365 lessons easily, right? It’s just a matter of how much time do we get with this talented teacher…
Keep the suggestions coming, folks. We’re still fleshing out the list.

I’ll throw it on the list of tunes to consider the next time Kevin is in-studio for us…hopefully later this year. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi, Shannon. I’m glad you’ve already learned some great tunes…keep it up! Limerock is a heck of a tough tune, but if you stick with it, you’ll get a good version by watching the lessons.
#1 Please see my other post regarding the possibility of ABC sheet music.
#2 In regards to your second question, I understand the desire for bumper-less…[Read more]

Would it help if I posted the Finale .mus file? I bet you could convert it to ABC…I don’t have any experience in doing so. Just let me know.

Hi, Shannon. I’ve never been that impressed with Dominants, except for their wound E strings (#129 or #130). I use Prim mediums to get a brighter tone on the G, D and A string and I use the Dominant wound E’s.
Hope that helps!

I’ve always loved this one and the way he plays it. That D-string first-finger slide up in the A part is so 🙂 🙂
For a great video on him playing it, look at about the 4:25 mark in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pOtZkeJkLE
Pretty please!!
ps those Polkas are fun too….

One thing about the music is – ultimately you don’t play from it of course – but there are several stages of learning. The sheet music is for the stage between learning the “bare tune” notes and the polished/totally memorized stage of the advanced tune.
As a learning tool, the memory reminder for the advanced version is a great time saver. We…[Read more]

Oh and one more thing:
5. Can we have a few lessons from Hanneke in doing rhythm violin like she does in her recording of Glass Case of Emotion on her album Silver?
Thanks for reading this!

Casey,
There is only one Irish player you could have gotten where I would gladly give my money to you to learn from and he’s the one you got!
Now that I’m spending time (and money :D) here on the site, can I just say a couple of things:
1. Could we also get the tunes in ABC format? I put them into Tunebook on my iPad where I can edit them and…[Read more]

Just got new strings, put them on and the tone is fuzzy. I guess Dominants don’t work on my fiddle.
What strings do you use? I’m looking for strings that are bright and easily responsive. I’d love to know what brand people use. Thanks!

Hi Casey, I’m really thrilled with your announcement and have watched Patti live at the NW Folk Life Festival in Seattle and a lot on FB and YouTube. She is an amazing fiddler and really embodies the Canadian Style of Dance music as well as her generous teaching spirt. I once heard a great tune that was partnered with the well known Canadian…[Read more]

Hey folks. I’m happy to announce that the great Canadian fiddler, Patti Kusturok, has agreed to join the Fiddlevideo project! She will be in-studio in March of 2016, and now is the time to get your lesson requests in. We’ve already had one request, but there is plenty of room for more suggestions at this time.
